Pounds lost: 15
Inches lost: 12.5
I’m an “over 40” fitness enthusiast — NOT a trainer or nutritionist — just a girl who loves the benefits eating healthy and working out have provided to me! When I’m not working out, my other passions are traveling, hiking, animal rescue and FOOTBALL (Go Cardinals!!).
I’m married to a great guy who is a brilliant PhD chemist and studies proteins with the goal of discovering biomarkers for early detection of disease. We live in Phoenix, Arizona with our rescued dogs Mojo (4 year old border collie) and Mama Bear (7 year old retriever mix).
I grew up in a teeny, tiny farm town in central Illinois – really just a dot on the map (my high school graduating class had 17 people!). I left there as soon as I could and went to sunny Arizona to go to college. I have a BS in Accounting and my MBA from Arizona State University. I spent almost 20 years in the corporate world as a CPA successfully climbing the corporate ladder. If anyone had suggested that at age 43 I would be retired from all that and loving my life as a Beachbody coach I would have thought that they were insane!
So, let me tell you a little bit about WHY I’m a coach. At the age of 11 I was diagnosed with scoliosis (curvature of the spine). I was always a fit kid and in every sport that my small town offered so this was a shocker. I didn’t let it slow me down though and tried to do what the doctors told me over the next several years. So, yet another shocker was the recommendation at age 18 to have a metal rod inserted in my spine. While the surgery is still very difficult to recover from today, back in 1988 it was 6 months in a body cast just to start. Luckily, my parents left the decision to me and I said “no thank-you”! Fast forward 20 years and I started having the chronic pain that doctors warned me would come. Sometimes it would take my breath away just standing up. I was worried this pain was from serious complications which can occur as you age with scoliosis. Luckily, this was not the case but the only suggestion of the doctor who had just met me and spent 5 minutes with my x-rays was pain meds! I was not going to be zoned out on pain meds for the next 50-60 years so I left and never went back to him.
At age 40, I took a friend’s challenge of completing P90X — for no other reason than to see if I could do it at this milestone birthday! I LOVED it and subsequently completed three more rounds. And guess what started happening? Less and less back pain!!!
My core and back was so strong from the P90X workouts that the pain was basically gone. There are still days where it hurts if I DON’T move enough but for the most part I am pain free! And in the words of the Mayo team who recently did a full scoliosis work up on me — “a poster child for scoliosis management”! So, needless to say pain avoidance is a great motivator and I’ll be doing Beachbody programs as long as I can breathe! In addition to my favorite P90X, I’ve completed P90X2, INSANITY, Slim in 6, Les Mills PUMP and COMBAT to name a few. I’ve also added daily Shakeology to the programs and cannot believe the effect that has had on my nutrition, energy levels and cravings! The side effect of all this was losing 15 pounds and 12.5 inches as well – not too bad for a now over 40 girl!
But that is not my only reason for becoming a coach — I discovered by “unofficially” coaching my self-proclaimed (and proud of it!) couch potato brother that these programs can work for ANYONE!! He literally despised anything to do with fitness and refused the first ~40 times I invited him to join me in P90X. But eventually something switched in his brain and he was ready and fully committed to making a change. It was so awesome helping him through his transformation and seeing how happy reaching his goals made him that I want to repeat that high over and over again!!!
So, while I am not a fitness expert, a trainer or a nutritionist I am fully committed to paying the success I’ve had with Beachbody programs forward and helping as many people as possible both physically and financially. I love the thought of building a strong Ditch the Belly team to truly impact Beachbody’s goal of ending the trend of obesity!! Since I get to do Beachbody coaching full time, I am literally available for Ditch the Belly teammates and coaches whenever you need some motivation or advice! And I’m extremely excited to be partners with my brother in this effort! Between the two of us we have totally different styles – one of which I’m sure will work with your personality type and fitness goals to get you the success and results that you deserve.
So…LET’S GO and DITCH THE BELLY!
I love that I look and FEEL better at age 44 than I did at 34 (and possibly 24, but I can’t remember that far back)! Here is my transformation story in pictures. Rather than bore you with the 100+ pictures I’ve taken since my journey began in December 2009 I’m just sharing the “total” picture! My obsession with Beachbody products looks like this (in the order completed!):
- P90X Lean Schedule
- P90X Classic Schedule (completed ALL 339 ab ripper moves – woohoo!)
- P90X Classic Schedule + Shakeology (got 7, yes 7, pull-ups!!!)
- P90X Classic Schedule
- Les Mills PUMP and Slim in 6 together
- Les Mills Combat Supreme warrior schedule
- Ultimate Reset
- Les Mills Combat Ultimate warrior schedule
- Focus T25
- The 21 Day Fix
Since I wasn’t working with a coach or a challenge group in the beginning, it took me awhile to figure out the nutrition side of things and start Shakeology. I thought that since I was doing the crazy hard P90X workouts I could eat whatever I wanted. Actually, I ate like a five year old before starting Shakeology. I would eat an entire loaf of French bread topped with “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” in my office for lunch! Yikes! And I really didn’t get the full impact nutrition had on my world until I did the Ultimate Reset. That was a life changer. So…while I saw decent results from just the workouts in those first 90 – 120 days, PLEASE take my advice: PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR NUTRITION!! Eat clean and start Shakeology as early in the process as you can and you’ll save yourself some time.
I am NOT perfect with my nutrition though and I don’t try to be. I believe in the 80 / 20 rule and enjoy the occasional cocktail or treat without freaking out. Life needs to be lived! And I think that is key for long-term success and making health and fitness a lifestyle. I don’t ever feel deprived or restricted in any way so I know I will keep my results and just get better instead of reverting to my old habits.
I can’t imagine a day when I won’t want to do Shakeology – my daily dose of dense nutrition – and workout like a maniac in the comfort and privacy of my home gym! I hope you catch the same addiction!!
